Kenya Karimikui PB
Karimikui Factory is operated by Rung’eto Farmers Cooperative Society (FCS), serving more than 2,500 smallholder farmers who cultivate coffee at 1,600–1,700 meters above sea level. Fertile volcanic soils and favorable weather conditions create ideal conditions for this Fully washed Peaberry (PB) lot, known for its distinctive shape and naturally sweet character.
Farmers primarily grow SL28, SL34, and Ruiru 11 on small plots averaging less than one hectare. SL varieties, developed by Scott Agricultural Laboratories, are valued for their deep roots, which help the trees access limited water resources. Ruiru 11 is known for its disease resistance, high yields, and ability to produce fruit from around two years of age. Sustainable farming and Good Agricultural Practices are encouraged throughout the growing process.
Only ripe cherries are selectively handpicked and delivered to the factory, where they undergo careful visual sorting and flotation. The cherries are then pulped and fermented for 12–24 hours, washed, and soaked for 24 hours. The parchment is dried on raised beds for approximately 7–14 days, with frequent turning and protection from intense sun and nighttime moisture to ensure slow, even drying.
Peaberries occur naturally in around 5% of coffee cherries. Instead of developing two beans, the cherry produces a single, rounder and denser bean. This distinctive shape can contribute to more even roasting and is often associated with a sweeter flavor profile. Peaberries are separated during dry milling using specialized screens.
